How Roof Ventilation Improves Your Home’s Energy Efficiency

Keep your home protected with metal roof ventilation like the one shown here.Between harsh weather storms and temperatures ranging from humid and hot to frigid, protecting your home is a tough job. Keeping it comfortable inside is a nice idea, but there are some steps you will need to take to have a consistent temperature throughout the year.

Your home's outer layer and interior walls provide two levels of protection against outdoor conditions. But aside from the roofing, siding, insulation, and more, consider your roof's ventilation as a significant need for your home's functioning. Check out our list of benefits proper roof ventilation brings to your home.

Keep Your Cooling Costs Low

We know that heat rises, so the hot air gets trapped in the attic during the hot summer months. Without a way to escape, this trapped hot air begins to spill into the other rooms in your house causing your AC unit or fans to work extra hard. With steady, well-maintained ventilation, your home will pass the hot air out through the attic lowering your energy costs.

Prevent Cold-Weather Condensation

The winter brings unique problems for your home's roof. The warm, humid air from the living spaces below trickles up to the attic. If this trapped air doesn't vent out of your attic over time, this moisture will settle on cold surfaces causing rot and roof buckling. The worse the buckling and decay get, the weaker your roof becomes and the more problems you will end up having facing. Proper ventilation will remove the moist air preventing health concerns from mold growth.

Lower Chance of Ice Dams

The warm air trapped in your attic in winter also causes problems on top of your roof. The warm air trapped just below the roof causes snow and ice on your roof to melt, slide toward your eaves and gutters, then freeze when it cools again. This melting and freezing lead to a buildup called an ice dam. Ice dams are dangerous because the frozen water expands, breaking down roofing materials exposing your attic to the elements. Vents that whisk away the hot air will prevent most ice dams.
